DAYTON

'The Sound of Music' has been a constant party fave of mine for 6-7 years now. Ice cold boogie track. My main man The Thick Repeater over at Videothunder introduced me to 'Meet The Man' around the same time. Too much, too soon!

WOJCIECH KILAR

Picked up a copy of this misty-eyed balearic classic on Berwick St the other day.

NINO ROTA

Incredibly evocative soundtrack by Nino Rota. Also used in Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park. Meh film, mwah use of music.

SVEN LIBAEK

Misty Canyon.

SADISTIC MIKA BAND

Lovely instrumental from this great Japanese group.

ESCLARECIDOS

Heart sleeve stuff. Spanish sax romance.

OKAY TEMIZ

Okay Temiz is a Turkish percussionist and all 'round creative soul. Lots of his music evokes a futuristic cyber cruise on a Bosphorus ferry, as is in evidence below.

JAMES CON HIELO BAND

Mamma mia, pass me a sangria...

LITTLE RIVER BAND

Choice selection from Australia's finest. I'm glad they got a few mentions in Will Ferrell's The Other Guys even if it wasn't entirely favourable.

Here they are getting their shirts sweaty with the home crowd in 1983. Palpably funky - I'm surprised that it's a seated venue.

T.C CURTIS

Another great night at London's premier disco night Horse Meat Disco. Personal highlight: when they dropped Shalamar's 'Right In The Socket' at midnight.

AIRTO MOREIRA

Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Eumir Deodato, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie: Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira collaborated with 'em all. On top of that he released a string of extremely strong solo long players. The track below sees Airto channeling Morricone. Suspense jam.

IN AETERNAM VALE

A group introduced to me through the excellently compiled 'Minimal Wave Tapes.' I can imagine this being on the soundtrack to Taxi Zum Klo.

MONYAKA

For those heading to the Notting Hill carnival today. Classic Easy Street groove.

THE WILLIAMS FAIREY BRASS BAND

Heard the Williams Fairey Brass Band's cover of 'Voodoo Ray' on a cos/mes mix a while back. Works very well. Like a colliery band competition at the Hacienda.

JACKIE MITTOO

Needs no introduction. Play this one on loop.

LA CHARANGA '76

Bank Holiday!

PIERRE BAROUH

Vivre! Glamour tune. Also, a sophisticated musical accompaniment to frantically searching your various pockets for your oyster card/keys.

TOP DRAWER

Heard this one on Noise In My Head (the never failing Melbourne-based radio show) a few weeks ago and it has really stuck with me. Lots of atmosphere and a three minute guitar solo. Repent!

FATHER YOD

Father Yod (also known as Ya Ho Wha) was a former WWII marine turned health food restauranteur, who formed the Source family commune. Within this commune he was the leader of the Ya Ho Wha 13, who were a religious sect/Hollywood Hills psychedelic jam band. Abide. Though their releases are a little bit patchy they're worth a listen (below). Yod's vocals lend a certain charisma to proceedings. He died in a hand-gliding accident in Hawaii in 1975. Too close to the sun.

SANDRA DE SA

Olhos Coloridos - 1982 - SMOOTH GROOVE.

P.A DAHAN & M. CAMISON

Lovely library tune from the Parisian TELEMUSIC stable. I originally heard this on a Trunk mix featuring Sauveur Mallia, Basil Kirchin, Guy Pederson. This was by far the standout.

ARCO IRIS

Out in the cosmos with these Argentinian psych pros.

GASPER LAWAL

Nigerian percussionist Gasper Lawal moved to England in the 1960s and went on to work with an assortment of musicians such as Ginger Baker, Joni Haastrup, the Rolling Stones and even Barbara Streisand. The track (below) is taken from his 1980 album 'AJOMASE.' Gasper also pops up having a rhythmic hoe-down in a train carriage with a very drunk Vivian Stanshall in a YouTube favourite of mine, 'Vivian Stanshall's Week.' Steve Winwood also features.

ANTONIO CARLOS & JOCAFI

The perfect soundtrack for jogging around the grounds of your Tuscan villa with select members of the Hungarian men's gymnastics team.

JOE BYRD & THE FIELD HIPPIES

Joe Byrd left his band the United States of America, ring modulator underarm and created the American Metaphysical Circus. Smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another...

FRANCO BATTIATO

Franco Battiato is a revered Italian musical polymath who made a big ol' trippy din in the early 1970s. Very inventive music. Here are two examples.

His classic 'Areknames.'

ONUMA SINGSIRI

Great track from Soundway Records The Sounds of Siam compilation. According to the liner notes this song "refers to the spicy som tam papaya-based salad." Tasty!

WILLIAM AURA

William Aura's 1987 LP release Half Moon Bay is a fine collection of New Age-y synthesizer washes and plucky balearic good times. Well worth seeking out. The video posted (below) by an endeavoring fanboy/fangal more than hits the spot in its approach to conveying the inner harmony of his track, 'Come My Way.' I think you'll agree with YouTube commentator PokeyGreen when they say...

I cannot think of anyone less likely to come to mind when I hear this than that old bat septugenarian has-been plolitician Nancy Pelosi!

Right on!

HERO LES BAXTER

I listen to Les Baxter everyday on the way to work. Les was a remarkably gifted composer and arranger who was at the forefront of the EXOTICA movement typified by another hero, Martin Denny. Exotica was music that aimed to relax the baby-boomer generation in their space age boudoirs. The album imagery featured beautiful Tahitian maidens and tropical island signifiers. It was also music which had an undercurrent of malice. No wonder Genesis P-Orridge and Boyd Rice are big fans. I really like the recording of Caribbean Moonlight (below) as it reminds me of the music played in the bar scene in The Shining. Music played through a cracked lens. Reminds me, albeit slightly, of the Caretaker's 'An Empty Bliss Beyond This World' - a poignant collection of crackling and looped 78s. Very much memory music for a failing memory.

MODERN FOLK UCLUSU

I haven't been able to find any videos that do justice to the Baris K edit of this track. Well worth tracking down his series of Turkish psych/disco edits. Guaranteed to tear down the walls of your bedroom disco.

MAX ROACH / M'BOOM

Incredible video of Max Roach's percussion ensemble M'BOOM filmed in the early 70s. All night vibes.

LULA CORTES E ZE RAMALHO 1975

Take a stroll through Lula Cortes & Ze Ramalho's extremely fragrant, psychedelic rain forest ashram.

ALAN STIVELL

Picked up a copy of 'Mist of Avalon' by Breton harpist Alan Stivell. As with the majority of celtic harp music (I've listened to about two records) it is an album that deals with Arthurian themes (not a complaint). Listening to the combination of celtic harp, synths and tabla brings to mind mysterious stone circles, whispering hills, ravens circling overhead etc...

Anyway, the track below is effing dope.

UKU KUUT

Some great examples of Uku Kuut's mid-eighties synthesizer magic. Soviet Jam & Lewis.

KARIN KROG

Karin Krog is a Norwegian jazz vox supremo. She played in Soho last year (or maybe the year before?) and like a goose I forgot to go. 'The Meaning of Love' (taken from her 1974 Steve Kuhn collaboration 'We Could Be Flying') has some extremely A+ drumming - almost like drum sticks have been attached to drummer Jon Christensen's nerve endings. Her version of 'How Insensitive' (below) is ice cool and suitably detached. It also features Dexter Gordon who delves deep on his solo.

LET'S GO! // SYLVIA TELLES

First post.

Sylvi(nh)a Telles' music has captivated me for years. Very subtle arrangements with a great deal of warmth. Compassionate music with a tremendous aura. All dat. Like Karen Carpenter had Bacharach, Sylvia had Jobim et al so the arrangements are obviously a treat. I just came across this video of her on Brazilian TV filmed, I imagine, shortly before her premature death. In the video she seems quite pensive but when she begins to sing her vocal is beautiful.

Torchsong-bossa below. A moonlit walk through Praia da Fazenda.
